Eastern gladiolus

1. Gladiolus byzantinus – grown as a cutting flower for sending to market and has now escaped and is wild on Scilly. Locals call them ‘Whistling Jacks’ – the children put the leaves between their thumbs and blow to make them whistle – as I did with grasses as a child [St Marys, Isles of Scilly, September 1992].
