1. Cock’s foot – the succulent sweet stems of this grass were eaten. One carefully drew out the flowering stems from the sheath and ate the lower two or three inches. I still do this.
A blade of tough grass, such as cock’s foot. was placed tautly between the thumbs facing you, and by blowing through the gap a shrill whistle was produced [Longford, Shropshire. April 1997].
