1. Shropshire …  thunder-flowers we always called bindweed (convolvulus) because if we picked these it would be sure to thunder before the day was out [Bessacar, South Yorkshire, April 1984].

2. In the 1950s in Invergowrie, Perthshire, bindweed was known as ‘young-man’s death’.  If you pick bindweed your boyfriend will die –  seems to be associated with the rapid fading of the flower [Stevenage, Hertfordshire, May 1982].
