100,000 white poppies

According to  the Quaker weekly magazine The Friend of 20 November 2015, 100,000 white poppies were sold in 2015, ‘reflecting an upward trend’.  White poppies have been produced since 1933 as an alternative to the more usual red poppies which are worn during the run-up to Remembrance Sunday each year.  They are considered to be an alternative to the British Legion’s red poppies, which some people regard as being too closely associated with militarism.  The Peace Pledge Union which produces white poppies is considering increasing its production in 2016.
