70th Anniversary of Hiroshima

Posted on by royvickery |

0056 August 2015 was the 70th anniversary of the bombing of the Japanese city of Hiroshima. Three days later a second nuclear bomb was dropped on the city of Nagasaki, both bombs caused hundreds of thousands of deaths.

London Region CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) holds an annual commemoration in Tavistock Square.  Despite travel being difficult due to a strike closing the London Underground, the organisers claimed that twice as many people as usual turned up to the 2015 event.  An hour-long rally starting at 12 noon, concluded with two minutes silence, during which people were invited to place flowers at the base of an ornamental cherry (Prunus cv.) tree, planted in memory of the victims of Hiroshima in 1967.
