Apple tree gift

Posted on by royvickery |

Among the gifts received by Prince George, the son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge born on 22 July 2013, was an apple (Malus pumila) tree, given to him by Ed Miliband, leader of the Labour Party.
According to The Times of 2 August 2013, this was ‘a nod to a Jewish tradition of planting a sapling for each newborn child. The three-year-old apple tree has already borne fruit …’
According to the Metro of the same date, Miliband’s aides said ‘an apple … was a traditional gift for a first born son’.
