Collecting the folklore and uses of plants

Brøndegaard ethnobotany collection

Posted on by royvickery |

The Danish ethnobotanist Vagn Jorgensen Brøndegaard (b. 1919) has collected works relating to the subject for more than 60 years. In 2003 this collection was acquired by the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry. In addition to books, there are over 11,000 ‘photocopies and excerpts’ sorted by subject and country.
Brøndegaard is particularly interested in plant-names, children’s games and superstitions. He was elected doctor honoris causa at the Swedish Agricultural University in 2006. His own publications consist of more than 1,500 titles, mostly articles and some 15 to 20 books. It is hoped that a list of these will be published later this year.
The Academy continues to acquire relevant books and now holds some 5,000 titles in English, German, and the Nordic languages.
