Cloned Christmas trees

Scientists at the Humboldt University, Berlin, are using cloning techniques to produce ‘flawless’ Christmas trees. ‘Currently 40% of trees don’t make the cut when they mature after 10 to 14 years. Some are stunted by frost while others turn out the wrong shade of green.’ It is hoped that a clone of ‘particularly hardy and beautiful’ trees will be produced by 2016 [Irish Independent, 24 December 2012].
