Collecting the folklore and uses of plants

Corpus Christi, Arundel, 2017

Posted on by royvickery |

The floral carpet in Arundel Cathedral, West Sussex, for its Corpus Christi celebrations, was prepared on Tuesday 13 June, and displayed on Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 June, until a well-attended mass and procession starting at 5.30 p.m.

The 2017 carpet, which as usual was composed mainly of chrysanthemum flowers and cypress foliage, commemorated the death in 1917 of the 15th Duke of Norfolk, who built the cathedral as the town’s Roman Catholic parish church, it becoming cathedral of the new Diocese of Brighton and Arundel in 1965.

At the conclusion of the evening procession some people collected and took home pieces of cypress and other fragments from the carpet.
