Wagon carrying an embroidered image of the Virgen Del Rocío setting out from San Cayetano (officially San Millán y San Cayetano) church, Lavapiés, Madrid, Spain, for El Rocío, Huelva, 21 May 2022. Pulled by two oxen the wagon will travel for about two hours to Casa de Campo before progressing to arrive at El Rocío in time for Pentecost (5 June).
Veneration of the Virgen Del Rocío dates back to the thirteenth century when her statue was discovered in a tree trunk, by the seventeeenth century people from nearby towns were making pilgrimages to the statue at Pentecost, and by the nineteenth century people from many parts of Spain joined the pilgrimage. It is believed that the pilgrimage from St Cayetano started in 1960.
