Ghost bikes, white-painted bicycles placed at sites where cyclists have died as a result of road accidents, were first recorded in St Louis, Missouri, U.S.A., in 2003. Within a decade the custom had spread to Europe with ghost bikes appearing in London and elsewhere. Often these bikes and surrounding railings are decorated with bunches of flowers, initially fresh flowers, later artificial ones.
The photograph, taken on 11 May 2014, shows a ghost bike in Lewisham High Street, near Lewisham station, in south London. In addition to the artificial flowers shown, other artificial flowers (and tinsel) decorate nearby poles.
