King Harold Festival 2023

Waltham Abbey, Essex, held its King Harold Festival, on Saturday 14 October 2023, the 957th anniversary of his death at the Battle of Hastings.  It is claimed that Harold was buried in the Abbey, which was said to be his favourite church at which he prayed while travelling to Hastings.

The 2023 event, the first Festival to be held since 2018,  ran from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., and included medieval re-enactors and drumming, and morris dancing.  At 2.00 p.m. a procession led by the town’s mayor and town-crier formed at the Epping Forest District Museum, in Sun Street, and walked to the Abbey grounds, where speeches were made, where  wreaths were laid on what is thought to be the site of Harold’s grave.
