Memorial of Primrose League secretary

Posted on by royvickery |

Headstone on grave of Mary Monteath Moran (1840-1901), Provincial Secretary of the Primrose League, in St Nicholas’ churchyard, Tooting, London.

The Primrose League was founded in 1883 in memory and in support of the political ideas of Benjamin Disraeli, who served as prime minister in 1868 and 1874-80.  At its peak in 1910 the League claimed to have two million members.  Thereafter it went into a gradual decline, eventually being disbanded in 2004.  Primroses (Primula vulgaris) were said to be Disraeli’s favourite flower.
