Mistletoe in churches

Posted on by royvickery |

It has been frequently been said that mistletoe, Viscum album, is banned from churches because it’s a ‘pagan’ plant; see, for example,  ‘Mistletoe – 1’ on this website.  Therefore its presence in Great St Mary’s church, Cambridge, is perhaps surprising.  For Christmas 2023 St Mary’s depiction of the Nativity was arranged on three small tables, one with the Magi on it, the central one with the Holy Family, and the third with the shepherds. Mistletoe was placed on the floor around the base of each table.

Photographed 4 January 2024.
