National Weed Appreciation Day 2018

Posted on by royvickery |

National Weed Appreciation Day seems to have been celebrated on 28 March each year in the United States since about 2015.  In 2018 the South London Botanical Institute – http://www.slbi.org.uk – decided to celebrate the day at Glengall Wharf Garden – https://burgessparkfoodproject.org.uk – in Burgess Park, London Borough of Southwark.

After heavy rain throughout the morning the weather improved somewhat by 2 p.m. when a good number gathered to walk around the garden to examine various weeds and discuss their many uses.  ‘Weeds’ studied included ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata) the leaves of which could be tied on the cuts to speed up healing, and, according to an participant, the seeds of which are good to eat.  After a meander around the garden we adjourned to enjoy ‘weedy’ food prepared by the Institute’s administrator, Nell Gatehouse.
