Palm Sunday in Uganda and Greenwich

Posted on by royvickery |

Note kindly supplied by Jane Lawson, March 2024:

‘When I lived in Uganda the Palm Sunday procession was beyond exuberant.  We all carried banana [Musa] leaves and processed from Nsube down the hill to Nkokonjeru (which was where the college was where I taught), and all round the shambas to the church. All the drummers were there and there was more than one donkey and lots of dancing.  My photos from all that time ago have faded, but here’s one from recent times.

I expect that as ever mass in Greenwich, London – at Our Ladye Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church – will be a much more restrained matter.

The usual bits of dried palm innappropriately made into crosses, from time immemorial they have been bought from a Carmelite convent.’
