Willow and purple statice arrangements

Posted on by royvickery |

Arrangements of willow (Salix sp.), twigs, purple statice (Limonium sinuatum),  and purple cloth, in and near the chancel of the Basílica do Bom Jesus do Monte, Braga, Portugal, Monday 25 April – the day after Palm Sunday – 2024.  Such arrangements were not seen in other churches in Braga and Porto.

An enquiry to the Basílica received the following reply from Fernando Rocha:

‘The Basilica of Good Jesus of the Mount is one of the most sought after churches in Portugal, and, as such, we take a special care with the decoration. About 150 weddings and approximately 100 christenings take place here every year. Our team look after the tidiness and decoration according the ceremony and liturgical schedule, and also the clients’ tastes.  At this time we have just finished Lent (purple) and have gone into Easter.  The  immortality is symbolized by the willow.’

Thanks to Luis del Nero, for translating the reply from the Basílica.  Comments would be appreciated, please send them to roy@plant-lore.com
