Puffball

1. Immature puffballs with creamy textured centres were commonly gathered and fried in butter [Holbeach, Lincolnshire, January 2003].

2. Common puffball (Lycoperdon perlatum) – my father told me that as schoolboys they called these curious looking fungi sheeps’ farts! [Clonlara, Co. Clare, September 1997].

Images: both of common puffball, collected Tooting Common, London Borough of Wandsworth; September 2014; Berkhamsted Common, Hertfordshire, November 2023.
