1. In 1958 when on holiday in Cornwall, I did some botanical recording. I got a farmer’s permission to examine his paddock, and he came and asked if I knew what made his cows scour when in this field. He pointed to Parentucellia viscosa and said ‘I thought it might be this; I don’t know what you call ‘e, but us call ‘e arse-smart [Syston, Leicester, January 1991].
