23 April is not only Shakespeare’s birthday but is also the day of St George, the patron saint of England, when red roses are occasionally worn.  Usually a few people can be seen wearing such flowers in London each year. The situation seemed to be similar in Birmingham, West Midlands, and Stratford-on-Avon, Warwickshire, in 2016.  No red roses are spotted in Birmingham, and very few in Stratford, where they were worn only by a group of about six older people and by a middle-aged man.
