Harry Patch, who died on 25 July 2009 at the age of 111, is believed to be Britain’s longest surviving First World War soldier.  His funeral was held in Wells, Somerset, Cathedral, and in May 2012 a memorial to him was unveiled in the Cathedral’s grounds.  Since then the memorial has remained decorated with artificial red poppies.
