The Lewes Arms, in Lewes, East Sussex, first held its Pea Throwing Championships in the 1990s. Since then it has continued on a Sunday afternoon usually in August or September; in 2025 it took place on Sunday 10 August.
Since there is no entry fee, and no limit to the number of competitors, the event can continue for several hours. Each contestant is provided with three frozen peas, which they throw along Castle Ditch Lane. There are three contests: children, ladies and men. The winner is believed to have thrown his pea ‘just shy of 30m’.
