Detail of the Martyrs’ Pulpit installed in Exeter, Devon, Cathedral in 1876-7, to commemorate Bishop John Coleridge Patteson, who was ordained in Exeter in 1854 and in 1855 went to spread Christianity in remote Pacific Islands. He was killed on Nukapu in the Solomon Islands, in September 1871. Other panels depict other people who died for their faith, including St Boniface, who was probably born in Devon and is now the county’s patron saint.
