Caraway

Run round the church three times on New Year’s Eve, and then throw caraway seeds over your left shoulder, and then you would see who you were going to marry.  Told to me by a schoolteacher in an Oxfordshire village in the 1960s, and may be dating back to the 1920s [Lambeth Local History Fair, Kennington, London Borough of Lambeth, September 2021].

This is the only report that we have of this practice, but see ‘Hemp seed I sow …’ on this website; other records, and comments, would be much appreciated, please send them to roy@plant-lore.com
