Lettuce

2014-02-02 14.42.211. Lettuce hung outside business in Gerrard Street, City of Westminster, London, awaiting the visit of a lion which will eat it, Chinese New Year celebrations, 2 February 2014.

2. In Hong Kong, where I come from, lettuce has the name which is like ‘vegetable of life’. That’s why lettuces are offered to the dancing lions at Chinese New Year celebrations. As the lion approaches the lettuce it’s quiet and slothful, but once it gets the lettuce in its mouth the drums start sounding loud, and the lion revives – like it’s had its batteries recharged [Natural History Museum, London, March 2004].
