Columbia Road Flower Market, 18 December 2022

The Columbia Road Flower Market, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, has been visited on a Sunday (the market is only held on Sundays) before Christmas every year since 2015.  In 2022 it was visited on 18 December.

As in 2021 the market stalls are now confined to one side of the Road, probably much to the delight of the shopkeepers on the other side who were attracting a lot of customers.

Again as in 2021, there was a wide range of ‘Christmassy’ and less seasonal plants and flowers on sale.  The most conspicuous Christmassy offering was winterberry (Ilex verticillata),  and mistletoe (Viscum album) seems to have made something of a comeback.  There were few, if any, poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima), the main flowering pot-plant being cyclamen.  No holly (Ilex aquifolium) was seen, and there seemed to be fewer Christmas trees than in earlier years.  Wreaths of various kinds remained popular.
