Although the feast of Corpus Christi falls on a Thursday, it is often celebrated on the following Sunday. In 2022 this was Sunday 19 June, when two Anglo-Catholic churches were visited in London.
In the morning All Saints, Notting Hill, held a mass which concluded with a procession of the Blessed Sacrament around the local streets. Although in the past the floor of the main aisle has been covered with a floral carpet, in 2022 it was simply scattered with rose petals. However, a ‘traditional Carpet of Flowers’ will be made for All Saints Summer Festival, on 15-17 July.
In the evening St Mary’s Bourne Street, Belgravia, held a ‘Solemn Evensong, Procession and Benediction of the Most Holy Sacrament’. The carpet prepared at St Mary’s usually consists of small twigs of various evergreen shrubs and trees, in 2022 it was shorter, covering only the main aisle rather than the entire route of taken by the procession of the Blessed Sacrament around the church, but more elaborate being enhanced by roses and rose petals and arrangements of rose petals at both ends.
