Wreaths placed at the Cenotaph, Whitehall, London, for International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, 24 May 2017. Each wreath consists of what appears to be cinnamon (Cinnamomum) leaves decorated with a couple of roses.
The first Day was held in 2003, and the usual date is 29 (not 24) May. It is not known when the day was first observed in London, or why it was marked on 24 May in 2017.
It is recorded that since 1948 some 3,500 people have died while serving on United Nations peace-keeping missions.
