Poppy tree-guard – 2

Poppy (Papaver rhoeas) tree-guard in Abbey car park, Romsey, Hampshire, photographed October 2020.

The history of this guard is unknown, but its state, and the amount of lichen growth on it, suggests that it probably commemorates the centenary of the start in 1914, rather than the end in 1918, of the First World War.  For some unexplicable reason there seemed to be greater enthusiasm for marking the start of the War than marking its end.
