Water melon as a symbol of Palestine – 1.

Following the Six Days War in 1967 the government of Israel forbade the display of the Palestinian flag.  Subsequently Palestinians adopted the water melon, Citrullus lanatus, the colours of which approximated those of their flag, as a symbol of resistance.
