Goostrey Gooseberry Show 2024

Posted on by royvickery |

Goostrey, Cheshire, is one of the few places where a gooseberry show survives.  Such shows were popular in the mid 19th century, but now only about eight survive.  Established in 1897, the Goostrey event takes place on the afternoon of  the last Saturday in July at The Crown pub.

Competitors bring their berries, often in specially made boxes, to be weighed, there being various classes, mainly according to their colour.  Weight is the all important factor, the appearance of the berries is unimportant.

After about two-and-a-half hours of serious weighing, there were competitions for the heaviest plates of berries of various colours.

After a break, numerous silver cups and other trophies, including a copper kettle – the traditional prize at various specialist shows in the north of England – were presented to the winners.
