London CND held its annual commemoration of the bombing of Hiroshima, which killed hundreds of thousands of people, on Wednesday 6 August, the 80th anniversary of the event, in Tavistock Square.

The original cherry tree, planted at the first commemoration in 1967 and the focal point for the ceremony ever since, was found to be diseased and had to be removed earlier in the year, so a new cherry (Prunus ‘Kanzan’) was planted.  The Mayor of Camden, Eddie Hanson, and others shovelled earth around the base of the tree, and later the Mayor followed the tradition set by previous mayors of placing a wreath at the tree.
