Plant-Lore

Collecting the folklore and uses of plants

Report: Roy’s top 30, 10 September 2025

This walk for the Wandsworth Carers’ Centre aimed to find and discuss 30 plants (the Centre is celebrating its 30th anniversary) in 90 minutes in Streatham Cemetery, Tooting, London.  13 people gathered at the Cemetery’s entrance on a grey morning, fortunately the rain held off until the last 10 or so minutes of the walk.

It appears that we were over ambitious and we only found 19 plants, though we discussed some plants which were not included on our list.  We were unable to find some of the listed plants, and others were well away from our planned route.  However, we enjoyed discussing what we were able to find, and people appear to have enjoyed themselves.

‘As part of our 30th anniversary we enjoyed a very special walk through Streatham Cemetery.  Led by local botanist Roy Vickery, the day brought together carers, volunteers and staff to learn about the unique plants and stories that make the Cemetery such a special green space.  It was a wonderful opportunity to connect, reflect and celebrate our community in nature, reminding us of the importance of wellbeing, togetherness and  discovery.’
