Collecting the folklore and uses of plants

REMINDER: Event 18 September

Thursday 18 September:  Season of Mellow Fruitfulness? walk, starting at the Woodfield Pavilion, Tooting Common, at 11 a.m. and continuing for c.75 minutes.  For further information see the Events page on this website.

Report:  Only one person turned up for this walk; perhaps others were discouraged by an uncertain weather forecast.  A pleasant hour was spent wandering around the perimeter of Woodfield, discussing some of the plants we found there; these included fruiting bittersweet (Solanum dulcamara), cockspur-thorn (Crataegus sp.) and yew (Taxus baccata), but the highlight of the morning was probably an extensive colony of sowbread (Cyclamen hederifolium), a species native to Greece, but now becoming widely naturalised throughout most of Britain.
