25 March, Feast of the Annunciation – 4

Posted on by royvickery |

The Feast of the Annunciation commemorates the appearance of the Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary to inform her of her pregnancy.  Depictions of this event in western art usually include Madonna lilies (Lilium candidum).  An exception the reredos of St Clement Danes church, in the Strand, London designed by the artist Ruskin Spear (1911-1990), which features roses (Rosa), rather than lilies.

Photographed March 2025.
