During the end-of-year period considerable progress has been made on a new book, provisionally entitled A Folk Flora.
This work will be a dictionary of the folklore and traditional uses of wild and cultivated plants in the British Isles. As far as possible each entry will include a list of local names, superstitions, customs and uses; mythology and topics such as the language of flowers will be ignored. Although priority will be given to plant-lore known in the period 1980 onwards, there will also be an attempt to try and indicate when beliefs and practices were first recorded and when they died out. Also it’s hoped that some indication can be given of the distribution of such lore.
Therefore any relevant information – memories, articles in local newspapers, and notes from autobiographies and local guide books, etc. – is urgently sought.
