Following the news that no World Nettle Eating Championship would be held this year (see News, 25 June 2011), it has been reported that the 2011 World Conker Championships have been cancelled. According to The Times of 8 October, the championships which have been held annually since 1965 have been cancelled due to high winds. John Hadman, the Ashton Conker Club’s secretary, explained that ‘the wind had defeated efforts to put up marquees … It’s a very exposed spot. The forecast is again for high winds at the weekend. It would simply be too dangerous to try and proceed’.
