Bampton, Oxfordshire, is well known for its Whitsun morris dancing, in recent years transferred to the Spring Bank Holiday, the last Monday in May.  Less well known are the garlands which children carry around village earlier in the day.  The photograph here, taken by Mike Mullin, a member of Hammersmith Morris Men, shows a garland carried on 25 May 1981.

Three years later Mike reported that ‘there was the usual number of garlands made by the usual number of old ladies’, implying that the garlands though carried by children are constructed by elderly women.
