The annual commemoration of the martyrdom of Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury from 1533 to 1555 who ‘conceived and wrote the original Book of Common Prayer’, took place in Oxford on Friday 21 March 2025, the anniversary of his death in 1556.

Proceedings started with a service of Choral Mattins in the University Church, after which the clergy, choir and members of the congregation processed to the Martyrs’ Memorial, stopping for a brief service at the spot where Cranmer was burnt at the stake.  Another brief service was held beside the Memorial, and a wreath attached to the metal fence surrounding it.
