Halloween pumpkins – 1

2014-10-21 12.15.12In the run up to Halloween newspapers have started carrying stories about pumpkins (Cucurbita maxima).  The Times of 2 October 2013 contained a photograph of a field of pumpkins at Draycott in Somerset.  The grower claims that his pumpkins ‘are bigger than ever …  I put it down to the warm weather.  It’s my best crop ever – they’re beauties.’  The following day the Metro carried a photograph of a grower at Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, who supplies 2014-10-22 15.44.25pumpkins to Sainsbury’s.  The supermaket chain expects to sell 1.5 million Halloween pumpkins.

The annual competition to find Britain’s biggest
pumpkin will take place at the Royal Victoria Country
Park, Netley, Hampshire, on Saturday 11 October.
