On 4 April 1922 we appealed for information on folklore associated with lichens.  Here we continue the appeal and add material collected more recently.

Corpus Christi carpets have been frequently discussed and illustrated elsewhere on this website.  Usually these are made of colourful flowers and foliage, but for the Corpus Christi procession in Béjar, Spain, on 7 June 2026, one of the carpets prepared featured lichens – Evernia prunastri  and Usnea spp.

This carpet, which also incorporated Spanish broom (Spartium junceum) and hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) flowers and dock (Rumex sp.) seeds, was prepared by the Asociacion de Latinos incorporated lichens; the other carpets were composed of florists’ flowers or coloured salt crystals.
