QUERY: Indecent names for bindweed

Posted on by royvickery |

Recently we have been told that there is a name for bindweed (Calystegia), and possibly other Convolvulaceae, which means ‘erect penis’, or ‘man’s erect penis’, but people have been too polite to actually tell me the name.  It appears that the name is known in Kent and possibly elsewhere, including North America.

Approximately 100 names for Calystegia are listed on the P-LA Local Names database, but none of them seem to have any phallic associations.  Indeed, the only two which can be considered at all salacious are grannies’ piss-pots  recorded in Lincolnshire, and piss-pots in Kent and Sussex.

If you know of the mystery name, please contact  Any other local names for bindweed would also be appreciated. Thank you!

Response:  Piss-pot – bindweed has the same name in Belgium (in Dutch/Flemish), spelt pispot [Woolwich Common, London, June 2021].
