White heather, September 2022

On 12 December 2022 British newspapers carried articles about the Christmas card which Charles, formerly Prince of Wales, is going to use for his first year as King Charles III.  The card shows Charles and his wife Camilla at the Braemar Royal Highland Gathering on 3 September 2022.

According to The Times Charles is wearing a tweed jacket with a flower ‘tucked in his buttonhole’.  From the accompanying photograph the flower can be identified as a cornflower, Centaurea cyanus.  The article continues by reporting that Camilla was ‘presented with heather posies by children who were members of the Braemar Royal Highland Society’s dancing class’, and had placed a sprig of it in her bottonhole.  From the photograph is is evident that the ‘heather’ was a white-flowered form of Calluna vulgaris.
