As noted elsewhere on this website, the sunflower, Helianthus annuus, has become an ‘an international symbol of  Green [Political] Parties’. The image here shows the logo of the Portuguese Green Party – Partido Ecologista ‘Os Verdes‘ – founded in 1982.

The Party is closely allied to  the Portuguese Communist Party, thus it has been given the nickname Melancias – Water melons, Citrullus lanatus – green on the outside and red within.
