On 7 October 2023 Hamas abducted 253 Israelis to keep as hostages in Palestine; about a year later it was thought that approximately 100 Israeli hostages remain in the hands of Hamas, the remainder having either died or been released.

To mark the first anniversary of the hostage-taking a display was set up in the grounds of Humboldt University, beside Unter den Linden, in Berlin.
