St Albans, Hertfordshire, celebrated its Alban Pilgrimage, on Saturday 24 June 2023. As in 2022 the event started with a procession from St Peter’s church to the Cathedral. On arrival at the Cathedral’s west door the story of St Alban’s martyrdom was told and acted out using giant puppets.
Many people then entered the Cathedral for the ‘Pilgrimage Eucharist’, at which the Bishop of Dover was the preacher.
Later in the day, at 2 p.m., there was a well attended Orthodox service at St Alban’s shrine, before the final service of the day, at 5 p.m., the Pilgrimage Evensong. At the end of this service the congregation processed past, and placed red roses, symbolic of Alban’s martyrdom, on his shrine.
