First held  in 2011, the annual Apple Yowling [wassailing) was held at the Ferry Boat Inn, in Tottenham, London Borough of Waltham Forest, on Old Twelfth Night, 17 January 2026.

The event started in the Inn’s carpark with ‘Preliminaries’, displays by five traditional dance teams, which lasted for about two hours, after which people processed to an orchard behind the pub for the Ceremony of Wassailing, ‘in which we yowl several trees to scare spirits, feed robins and encourage growth’.  (In fact the trees all looked rather neglected, and probably needed a good pruning, rather than being encouraged to produce more growth).

Children were encouraged to place toasted bagels (convenient for slipping on to twiggy growth) on the trees, and ‘wassail cider’ was sprinkled on their roots.  After which everyone was encouraged to make a noise, ‘to awaken the tree spirit, and sing the Apple Tree Wassail song.

When the last tree had been yowled, at about 8 p.m., people were invited to the ‘Revelries’, ‘a session at which you are invited, indeed encouraged, to sing a song, start a tune, or tell a story … or simply to sit and enjoy the warm spirit that the Revelries create.

The event was attended and enjoyed by a large number of people of all ages.
