The Macneil.  There are two main branches of this clan – those of Gigha, an island off the coast of Knapdale, and others of Barra, the northernmost island of the Outer Hebrides.  The Gigha family had great influence in Argyllshire in early times under the Lords of the Isles, but latterly the Macneils of Barra, who obtained a charter from the Crown in 1427, have always been held to represent the chief branch, and it is their tartan that is here shown.  The family lands, however, have passed into other hands.  The Macneils of Colonsay are also an important  family, and they have contributed several distinguished names to the public service.  The clan war cry is ‘Buaidh no Bas’ (Victory or death) and the badge ‘Dryas’ [Dryas octopetala, mountain avens].
