On 16 June 1976 students in Soweto, a township of Johannesburg, South Africa, rioted in protest against the government decree that Afrikaans as well as English should be used in black schools.  Afrikaans was considered to be the language of the oppressor.  A peaceful demonstration was met with police violence resulting in the death of possibly 600 protestors.  A memorial ‘to the 116 children who died’ was unveiled in Max Roach Park, in Brixton, London Borough of Lambeth, on 13 June 1998.

Taken on 1 July 2026, the photograph here shows flowers attached to the memorial, presumably placed there on the anniversary of the massacre.
