According to the Metro of 29 July 2015, villagers in Savinac, Serbia, are placing garlic (Allium sativum) ‘on their doors’ as they are afraid that the felling of a 600-year-old oak (Quercus) tree to make way for a motorway ‘will allow vampires to escape’. Although construction workers say they had permission from the Orthodox Church, the ‘village president’ said the felling ‘should have been done in the presence of a priest’.
